"Unique to Tibetan Buddhism, prayer flags printed with auspicious symbols and colors are believed to transmit blessings and exert a powerful force for good when they flutter in the wind. High in the Himalayas, such sacred flags have been flown for more than a thousand years, symbolizing the protective and healing influence of the Dharma." Thanks to the Tibetan Aid Project.
I have adapted a traditional design I found long ago in a Himalayan art book, redrawn to transparent positives, from which I have made silkscreens in various sizes. I print the image on cotton-poly fabric in a sequential order of 5 colors: blue, white, red, green, and yellow. The Lung-ta or Windhorse in the center carries the prayers to every corner of every conceivable universe, to bring compassionate wishes to all beings. The flags are typically hung outdoors where they eventually disintegrate in the elements.
I have silk screened these flags by hand, using colorfast textile inks. There are 10 flags, each measuring approximately 7" square (the flags altogether measure 70", almost 6'), stitched onto a 9.5' dark green nylon braid cord.
My interpretation of the lotus flower of compassion is silkscreened in royal blue ink on five of the flags; the circular mantra of compassion (OM MANI PEME HUNG) with the seed syllable, HRI, in center is silkscreened in black on five flags. Their order alternates along the strand, while maintaining the traditional color order of blue, white, red, green, and yellow.
I will provide each set of flags with a written explanation of some of the meaning behind these symbols. May all beings benefit from the blessings contained in these sacred syllables.
String of 5 traditional Tibetan prayer flags, each individual flag is 12"x8", hand silkscreened on bright cotton/poly fabric, and stitched to a 9' braided nylon cord. Note your choices of 10-flag and 15-flag strings, in which the 5-color sequence will be repeated.
Hang these outside, so the wind can carry blessings and prayers of good wishes to all beings throughout space and time. Silk screened by hand on blue, white, green, yellow, and red cloth, this heartfelt message will brighten any landscape and send good vibes to all! They are lovely indoors as well: the size is perfect for a window valance decor. I'll include a short printed explanation. May all beings benefit!
The rainbow colors of these flags dance on the wind to carry many blessings to all beings, near and far! You will receive a string of classic 'wind horse' prayer flags, which I hand silkscreen on bright poly/cotton broadcloth fabric, and stitch to a 12' nylon cord.
Each flag is approximately 8" x 6" and there are nine of them: red, red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow, yellow-green, grass green, turquoise blue, royal blue, and violet.
I've maintained the tradition of torn edges or imperfectly raw cut fabric, so the sun and wind's activity creates the most interesting frayed and worn effect. Impermanence at its best!
When hung these outside, the wind will carry blessings and prayers of good wishes to all beings throughout space and time. They are also lovely on a porch or tree house! This heartfelt message will brighten any landscape and send good vibes to all.
